I was listening to one of the interviews in our audiobooks whilst driving in my car yesterday and was struck by a commentary made by Nick Snelling. Are you coming to Spain to upgrade your lifestyle or upgrade your house? What is your reason for coming to Spain?

I am asking this because so many people have “failed” in Spain because of overspending on first arriving and not having the backup once their business, work or life is going through a difficult patch. As an estate agent you would expect me to want you to spend the most money possible on a house as I work on a commission. That is not true though. What I want are happy customers who will recommend me to others, so overselling does not appeal.
If you have 250k available for example but your requirements can be met with 180k why should you spend 250k or even more? It makes little sense. The extra 70k can be used for travelling, getting to know the country, investing and doing a whole host of really fun things that you wouldn’t be able to do if you were simply penny pinching. This is of course lifestyle design and lifestyle upgrading. In an ideal World you earn in pounds, and spend in rupees as what you earn is disconnected from where you spend it.

The question is what do you prefer, a little less luxury at home and a much better lifestyle on the streets or all the home comforts that you can think of and a fourth and fifth bedroom that you hardly ever use?
